Students at Sebastopol Primary School took a step back in time early last month when staff from Sovereign Hill made the treacherous journey on horseback across the Yarrowee Plantations in Ballarat dressed in full costume to meet their letter writing buddies for the first time.

Staff at Sovereign Hill are genuinely excited about being involved in the Literacy Buddies program. We are all enjoying the opportunity to watch our Little Buddies develop their writing and communication skills." - Sovereign Hill reflect on their involvement in the Literacy Buddies Program.

The program is designed to give the children a real-life context to practice their writing and composition skills. The exchange is also aimed at building the aspirations of the children by bringing them in contact with working role models, which they may lack in their immediate surroundings.

The Ardoch Literacy Buddies program provides our students with a really clear purpose for developing their literacy skills. The students exchange letters with Sovereign Hill staff – “Big Buddies” who are committed to caring about the educational outcomes of children within their community.” - Michelle Wilson, Principal of Sebastopol Primary School speaking on the effectiveness of Literacy Buddies.
