Ardoch is excited to be a recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Readings Foundation. The Foundation aims to support Victorian organisations dedicated to the development of literacy, community integration and the arts. Ardoch will use the grant to grow our popular Writer in Residence program and run four of them with our partner schools in Inner Melbourne, Melbourne’s West, Frankston and Dandenong.

Launched by authors Susannah McFarlane and Emma Bowd in 2016, Writer in Residence program uses an innovative approach to engage children in literacy. The program sees published writers deliver book-writing workshops to Year 3, 4, 5, 6 students at our partner primary schools. The weekly workshops extend over seven weeks during which the writer helps the children identify story ideas, building characters, pen their stories, edit them, create illustrations and put a story book together. At the end of the program, each child receives a copy of their published book to keep.

The children benefit through greater creative engagement in learning and literacy, building their confidence and writing skills and inspiring them to create stories together. The opportunity to work closely with a published author and positive adult role model also builds their aspirations and self-esteem.

Thank you to the Readings Foundation for generously supporting Ardoch!
