Learning Through Lunch

Ardoch’s Learning Through Lunch program has been designed to help children develop confidence by engaging in table conversation with adult volunteers, trying new foods, becoming familiar with a restaurant setting and recognising hospitality as a possible career path.

Through this program, we take a class of primary school children to a restaurant lunch in a hospitality training college setting or a social enterprise restaurant (providing training and employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people). The students are accompanied by volunteers from the community who guide them through the experience and converse with them about their life, goals and aspirations.

“The Learning Through Lunch program is a wonderful initiative where our students are introduced to a restaurant experience. The feedback from the children about the different types of food and the etiquette expected at a formal style lunch is priceless. Some children do find it challenging and are out of their comfort zone, however the majority of the children embrace the goats cheese arancini and green salads! It is a practical experience and enables the children to look beyond ‘take away’ options,”

- Julie Braakhuis, Principal Seaford Park Primary School.
