Writer in Residence

Ardoch’s Writer in Residence program uses an innovative approach to engage children in literacy. The program sees published writers deliver book-writing workshops to Year 4 and 5 students at our partner primary schools.

The weekly workshops extend over seven weeks during which the writer helps the children identify story ideas, building characters, pen their stories, edit them, create illustrations and put a story book together.

The program was launched by Susannah McFarlane and Emma Bowd in 2016.  Susannah has authored more than 50 children’s books and is an Ardoch ambassador. Emma is an Australian author and co-authored a book with the Sunshine students titled Pencil Pandemonium.

The workshop promotes:

  • literacy and language development
  • critical thinking and comprehension skills
  • enthusiasm for reading and writing
  • confidence in ones own voice and ideas

“Writer in Residence gave the children, most of all, motivation. It created a sense of excitement that is sometimes difficult to bring about in writing”.

- Year 3 and 4 Teacher, Sunshine Primary School

“The Writers in Residence program is about turbo-charging the kids’ enthusiasm for and confidence in writing, helping them to put their thoughts on paper more fearlessly.”

- Susannah MacFarlane, an author conducting Writer in Residence program.
