Numeracy Buddies

numeracy buddies

Numeracy Buddies is an innovative workplace volunteering program that engages students with maths in an interactive and fun way.

The program matches a classroom of primary school students (usually between Year 4 and 6) with a group of Workplace Volunteers from a common workplace.  Each student or Little Buddy is paired with a workplace volunteer or Big Buddy. They interact with each other online through a blog forum. The teacher sets out maths problems on the blog that the Little Buddies solve with the help of their Big Buddies. The Buddies visit the workplace at the end of the program.

Over the course of the year, the Buddies not only interact over maths, they also have conversations about the relevance of maths in real life, STEM- related careers and the value of learning and education.

Specifically, the Numeracy Buddies program promotes:

  • stronger numeracy skills through solving of maths problems
  • understanding of the relevance of maths in everyday life
  • school-study-work pathways and aspirations of the participating children

The program is not offered to individual volunteers. We build partnerships with workplaces, which participate in the program.

“What struck me when I did the Numeracy Buddies program was that for many children maths is a theoretical subject. They don’t quite appreciate the practical applications of it. So it is refreshing to just be able to engage in a discussion with a child about we how use arithmetic in our normal day-to-day life and how important that is.” Wesley Michael, Workplace Volunteer.
