Robotics Program

robotics

Ardoch provides opportunities for students from our partner schools to engage with learning through Robotics.

This helps students to learn about engineering, robotics and programming using Robotics kits. They also engage in teamwork and collaboration and prepare to enter school robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League.

Ardoch provides the technology kits to schools, which vary depending on the age of students. We also train the teachers in their use. Junior primary students engage with WeDo 2.0 Core Set, which introduces them to hardware and coding to build a space rover. Older students use the MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Core set, which engages students in more advanced coding and STEM learning.

Ardoch also places dedicated and trained volunteers who prepare the students to participate in the First LEGO Leagues in their region over 4-6 weeks. The challenge usually involves building a robot to solve a real world problem. The program promotes:

  • engagement with applied engineering
  • engagement and interest in applied science
  • awareness of the relevance of STEM in everyday life
  • confidence to participate in science competitions

In 2016, the Ardoch-supported Christ the King Catholic Primary School in Newcomb (Geelong) came second in the Victorian FIRST LEGO League and participated in the National Championship held in Sydney.

Where We Work

“LEGO Robotics is a great way for students to learn about technologies in a fun and creative way. There is so much scope to allow for all students to experience success. Our Year 3/4 students have loved using LEGO Robotics. We’ve also found that while a task could be challenging, the Year 3/4s worked particularly well together to achieve the task due to that level of challenge. We look forward to expanding the LEGO Robotics program into other year levels.”
