What is Numeracy Buddies?

Ardoch’s Numeracy Buddies program is an innovative education initiative for children in Grades 4 to 6.

Each Numeracy Buddies Program matches a class of 20 to 30 primary school student ‘Little Buddies’ with a group of individual corporate volunteer ‘Big Buddy’ mentors (usually staff from a common workplace). ‘Big’ and ‘Little Buddies’ then interact online through a blog forum with conversations focusing on the maths being undertaken by the student in class and its use in everyday life, plus other topics like maths related careers and supportive dialogue on the value of learning and education.

Numeracy Buddies develops:
  • Strong relationships between Big and Little Buddies
  • Team building and community awareness for volunteers
  • Positive working role models for children
  • School-study-work pathways and aspirations
  • Numeracy skills, social and life skills
  • Connections between schools, communities and businesses
Get involved!

Ardoch is now looking for businesses to sponsor and participate in Numeracy Buddies programs in 2017. Your
support will achieve positive outcomes for children’s numeracy through engagement, achievement and aspiration
and support advancement in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths for the future.

“Kids need to be shown how to use maths to solve interesting problems. Not to do so is like teaching them to spell without teaching them to write prose.”
